Overview

Today, we’ll be starting on a collaboration with students working on Ordinary Differential Equations. To prepare for that collaboration, you’ll review the main example that you’ve seen of how to translate between an agent-based model and an ODE-based model.

Basic Learning Objectives

Before class, you should be able to:

  • Identify what variables are shared between an ODE and an ABM generally
  • Report on the key variables from your artificial ecology assignment

Advanced Learning Objectives

After class, you should be able to:

  • Assist a collaborator in constructing an ODE based on your artificial ecology assignment

Resources

You should reread the following, with a particular focus on how the equations relate to the agent-based model:

  • Section 7.1 (Ecosystem models) in Biological Bits

Checks

Submit answers to the following on Moodle:

  • Imagine you have only the kangaroo, dingo and grass agent-based model. What information would be needed from that system to (re)create the ODE?
  • What are the important pieces of information from your artificial ecology project for an associated ODE? If you don’t have all the information needed, how do you think you could get it?

(You should also prioritize having your artificial ecology assignment at a place where you can discuss it with the other class.)
